Naturally Amsterdam had an exotic appeal to me. It was on the short list of places I'd wanted to visit for a long time. Not knowing anyone but friends-of-friends there, I ended up staying in hostels. Both were great experiences. Amsterdam is an amazing walking city, and a fabulous place to take photos.
Of course, the Van Gogh Museum (no photos allowed inside) was one major reason I wanted to go to Amsterdam. I also really enjoyed the Rijksmuseum.
At the time I went, there happened to be a snowstorm which apparently is a bit unusual for them.
Let's face it, the coffeeshops are also a lot of fun.
And hats off the The Flying Pig. Sure, it was a long time ago, but I bet their relaxed, happy vibe is still in full force at both of their Amsterdam locations. I also really enjoyed Euphemia Hostel.
